VALUES + Community Work

WHAT WE STAND FOR

More than just a hair salon, Coastal Curl is a space for folks to be their full, authentic selves. On the surface, our work is about creating and maintaining healthy, beautiful hair, particularly for those who haven’t had the opportunity to see the full potential of their natural texture. Integrated with our daily work is an effort to be responsible members of our community and our planet. We build relationships with our neighbors, participate in ongoing education, give back to the community, and prioritize social justice as part of our business model.

fostering community

Each year around the holiday season, we throw a Give Back & Kickback event, where community members gather to socialize, eat and drink, and swap gently used or unopened hair products. All remaining products and a percentage of proceeds are donated to the East Oakland Youth Development Center. In January 2024, we also had an opportunity to speak to the youth at EOYDC about careers in the beauty industry.

Creative Collaboration

We prioritize sourcing work from within our Curl family whenever we can to sustain meaningful relationships with artists and other small businesses. Coastal Curl’s packaging, stickers, and custom design work was done by Saihej Cheema, a South Asian designer based in San Francisco, and our apparel and merchandise was made in collaboration two Latinx artists from Oakland, graphic designer Reyna Colt Lacayo and musician/textile artist Mario Armando Ruiz. Our website and e-commerce space are designed by Mo Enriquez Mottley, a Filipina American web designer based in Oakland.

Protecting Ecology

We are a certified Green Circle salon, participating in an international effort to reduce and recycle beauty waste, and most of the products we use in our salon and offer through our online shop are from small, POC-owned, organic brands to ensure a high level of quality and hair health.

Respect + Inclusion

All of our stylists and employees commit to a practice of respect and inclusion, pledging to the following salon code of ethics:

As a member of the Coastal Curl community, I will strive to create an atmosphere that welcomes everyone. I pledge to treat everyone I encounter with the utmost respect— regardless of race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, or age. In turn, I will expect the same level of respect from my peers. I commit to fostering a peaceful work environment that is free of discrimination, harassment, or prejudice of any kind. I commit to encouraging an environment that allows myself and others to show up as fully myself.

I commit to examining and challenging my unconscious biases.
I commit to tolerating beliefs that may conflict with my own.
I commit to being present, holding space, and being compassionate towards others.
I commit to being a thoughtful global citizen — good to the planet and to myself too.
And if I violate these commitments and agreements, I intend to take accountability for my actions and/or part ways with Coastal Curl.
