    Absolutely! We are an education-focused salon, and each appointment includes an in-depth consultation, personalized product recommendations, and hair health suggestions. We love to be your trusted advisor in all things hair!

  • how do you cut kinky, curly, or wavy hair?

    We like to approach curly cuts at the hair's most natural state. This is why it is super important to come into your appointment with your hair down, no pony tails, no protective styles, not stretched out, and preferably day 1 of your wash and go. All curly cuts are cut dry.

  • I have loose wavy hair or mostly straight hair, can I come to your salon?

    You definitely can, although we do not specialize in precision-based straight hair cuts. We specialize in bringing out as much healthy natural texture as we can in hair, regardless of how loose or tight the pattern is. If you have looser waves or curls and like a “lived in” beachy appearance, our services would fit your needs.

  • Do all your stylists work with Black hair?

    Absolutely, we love Black hair! All of our stylists understand your hair has meaning, and the complexity of its history. Bring on the afro, the coils, the kinks, the locs and the loose curls. We promise to treat it with the utmost respect.

  • Can you cut men's hair as well?

    Yes, our space & services are designed for people of any gender. We proudly offer short clipper cuts for those desiring a more masculine appearance, or blended services where we use clippers & shears as well. However, as of this time, we do not offer beard services.

  • Can you service hair with multiple curl patterns?

    Yes! It is very common to see curly heads have multiple curl patterns, which we are well versed in.

  • Are there any treatment plans to revive my curls?

    Yes! We recommend booking the Ultimate Hair Healing package if you are looking to repair and revive neglected/damaged hair.

  • Are your stylists certified curl specialists?

    Yes! All of our stylists have taken texture-specific classes or undergone specialized curl training.

APPOINTMENTS AND BOOKING

  • Where is Coastal Curl located?

    We are located at 3602 Grand Avenue, Oakland, CA steps away from the Grand Lake Theater.

  • Is parking available near the salon?

    Yes, there is plenty of metered parking all along Grand Avenue. If you ride public transportation the nearest BART Station is Lake Merritt. There is also an AC Transit Bus stop nearby on Grand Ave & Mandana Boulevard.

  • Do you accept walk-ins?

    No, not typically. We require appointments be made online before booking. Please advise that we often book our appointments multiple weeks out.

  • Where do I go to book an appointment?

    All bookings are made online via this website or the Vagaro app. Select the “BOOKING” tab at the top right of this page. Please advise, we are currently in very high demand and appointment availability is limited.

  • How do I know which service is right for me?

    If you are ever in doubt we’d love to help you choose the service that best meets your needs. Please email hello@coastalcurl.co with your questions, and we will assess your hair goals to determine which service is most suitable for you.

  • Can I choose my stylist?

    Absolutely on our booking site, you can choose to book your appointment based on the stylist. Select the service you’d like, the “Service Provider” drop-down, and select the stylist of your choice.

    Please advise, each stylist is an independent service provider and sets their own pricing.

  • Where can I view stylist availability?

    Our booking site will display stylists availability based on service. Select service, service provider, then search this will display their availability.

  • Is a deposit required for booking?

    We require a credit card to reserve your appointment, however, it will not charge you a deposit but if you miss your appointment you will be charged for the service.

  • I need to cancel my appointment, what do I do?

    We understand life happens! However, to protect our stylists’ living wage, we have a strict 48 hour cancellation policy. If you need to cancel or reschedule please reach out to us before this window via call or text at (510) 806-8004.

  • What is the best way to contact the salon?

    We are a small team, so please allow non-urgent messages or requests at least 2 business days for a response.

    We accept all major credit cards, cash, and Venmo.

  • Do you offer consultations?

    Absolutely! We offer consultations for color services or if you are just not sure what service you are needing and need help discussing your options.

  • What services does the salon provide?

    We offer curly haircuts, traditional wet haircuts, color services, blowout services, repair treatments, loc retwist services.

  • Do you service children?

    Yes! We have a Youth Haircut Service that is for kids between 7-12 years of age. If your child has tight curly or coily hair, please arrive with hair down & detangled (no buns, ponytails, or braids).

  • What services do you offer for clients who don't have curls?

    We offer traditional wet haircuts, blow out services, color services, and loc services.

  • What hair care lines are carried in the salon?

    We carry Innersense Organic products, Uncle Funky Daughters, Briogeo, and Loc Dr. products.

  • Are the products used eco-friendly?

    Absolutely we strive to provide high quality products for our clients that are eco-friendly.

  • I have sensitive skin–is it safe for me to use the salon products?

    Yes, all of our products are non-toxic and made from natural ingredients which means there are no chemicals or harsh ingredients.

  • What hair types do your products cater to?

    We work with a number of brands, and our products have been curated cater to all hair types. Straight, wavy, curly, tight curls, locs, and/or afro-textured hair alike.

  • Can I purchase products to take home after my appointment?

    Absolutely, we have a great selection and stock for your at-home care.
